Increase Number of Alcohol-Free Settings, Events, and Activities

Many high school and college students say that they attend parties or go out drinking because "there is nothing else to do." Like older adults, adolescents and young adults enjoy socializing and need a variety of avenues to interact with peers, make new friends, and pursue romantic relationships. In the absence of alcohol-free places to socialize, young people go to parties where alcohol is present, and may succumb to peer pressure to drink. By promoting social, recreational, extracurricular, and public service options that do not include alcohol, students are given the opportunity to socialize in an alcohol-free environment.

Strategy

Pennsylvania State University now allocates more than $110,000 a year for alcohol-free activities scheduled from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekend nights, including first-run movies, hypnotist shows, ballroom-dancing lessons, and concerts. The school has seen attendance at these events more than triple, to 24,000 students a semester, in just 2 years.
